Septic systems in North Carolina

Many relocators to western North Carolina from cities and suburbs are faced for the first time with the prospect of having a septic system. Septic systems are used in every county in North Carolina: more than 50 percent of the homes have them, and new systems are being installed at a rate of 40,000 per year. This publication from the department of Soil Science at NC State University answers typical questions about septic systems and their maintenance.
